How mice enter homes | what size hole can a mouse get through

House mice are so small, they can gain entry into homes and other buildings much more easily than rats. As a result, house mouse infestations are probably 10 to 20 times more common than rat infestations. Effective mice control involves sanitation, exclusion, and population reduction. Sanitation and exclusion are preventive measures. When a mouse infestation already exists, some form of population reduction such as trapping or baiting is almost always necessary.
mice are more common and cause significantly more damage. Mice are prolific breeders, producing 6-10 litters continuously throughout the year. The greatest economic loss from mice is not due to how much they eat, but what must be thrown out because of damage or contamination. Food, clothing, furniture, books and many other household items are contaminated by their droppings and urine, or damaged by their gnawing. House mice gnaw through electrical wiring, causing fires and failure of freezers, clothes dryers and other appliances. Mice also can transmit diseases, most notably salmonellosis (bacterial food poisoning) when food is contaminated with infected rodent feces.  Mouse control extermination is limiting shelter and food sources wherever possible. Trapping works well, especially when a sufficient number of traps are placed in strategic locations. Trapping also can be used as a follow-up measure after a baiting program. When considering a baiting program, decide if the presence of dead mice will cause an odor or sanitation problem. If so, trapping may be the best approach. After removing mice, take steps to exclude them so that the problem doesn’t recur.
Sanitation, which includes good house keeping practices and proper storage and handling of food materials, feed, and garbage, is often stressed as a method of rodent control. Unfortunately, even the best sanitation will not eliminate house mice. It will, however, aid in control by permitting easier detection of mouse sign, increasing effectiveness of traps and baits by reducing competing food items, and by preventing mice from flourishing and reaching high populations.
Although house mice are less dependent upon humans for their existence than are Norway rats, they are much more adaptable to living with people. They require very little space and only small amounts of food. Mice have been known to inhabit buildings even before construction has been complete, living off the crumbs and scraps of worker’s lunches. In offices, mice may live behind cabinets or furniture and feed on scraps or crumbs from lunches and snacks and on cookies or candy bars kept in desks. In homes, they may find ample food in kitchens, and in the garage they will eat sacked or spilled pet food, grass seed, or insects such as cockroaches. Thus, no matter how good the sanitation, most buildings in which food is stored, prepared, or consumed will support at least a few mice. For this reason, a constant watch must be kept for mice that may invade the premises.

Adult bed bugs are about the shape and size of an apple seed and go through  molt stages, shedding their skins, which is an indicator their presence. After feeding, bed bugs return to their harbor age to hide. They eventually defecate in these areas, which appears as black to brown stains on porous surfaces or black to brown mounds on nonporous surfaces.Bites also may indicate bed bug activity, but further signs will need to be found, since other sources can cause red welts on the skin.

People often don’t consider bed bugs before bringing second hand items into the home. Consider that people often acquire used items in the following ways:

•Buying goods that have been returned to a store and are being sold as new.

•Receiving hand-me downs.

•Buying things from garage and tag sales.

•Buying things from flea markets.

•Taking items left curbside for free.

•Buying items through online and offline classifieds.

If you bring things into your home that you have obtained through any of the above channels, make sure you check everything thoroughly. It may even pay to isolate those things in storage somewhere for a bit until you can inspect them and possibly treat them.

The Health Effects of Bed Bugs

Although bed bugs and their bites are a nuisance, they are not known to spread disease.

• Bed bug bites can be very itchy and irritating. Most welts heal in a few days but in unusual cases, the welt may persist for several weeks. Usually an anti-itching ointment will help, but if bites become infected, people should see their doctor.

• The anxiety about being bitten can lead to sleeplessness, which can affect one’s wellbeing. Properly and effectively responding to bed bugs helps to keep anxiety in check. Some people become so desperate that that they use illegal or excessive amounts of pesticides that can lead to poisonings.

Clean areas where bed bugs hide

Thoroughly clean all bedding, linens, curtains, rugs, carpets, and clothes.Washing items in hot water and drying them on the highest dryer settingwill kill bed bugs. For those items that may be harmed by washing and drying at high temperatures, soak in warm water with lots of laundry soap for several hours before rinsing.

• Wipe away or vacuum all dust from the bed frame, nearby furniture, floors and carpets. Vacuum mattresses carefully. After vacuuming, immediately place the vacuum cleaner bag in a plastic bag, seal it tightly, and throw the bag away in an outdoor container.

• If you find bed bugs on the mattress, buy a waterproof zippered mattress cover. These covers often say “allergen rated,” or “for dust mites.” Scrub the mattress seams with a stiff brush to dislodge bed bugs and any eggs. Then enclose the mattress in the cover for at least one year. This will trap any remaining bed bugs inside the cover, killing them.

• Throw away and replace an infested box spring if necessary.

• Remove all clutter from bedrooms and any other furniture that people may sleep or nap upon. Place this clutter into a plastic garbage bag, seal it tightly, and throw it away. If you need to save it, make sure it stays sealed up for a year.

• Repair any cracks in plaster and all loosened wallpaper, especially in bedrooms.

Pesticides and Fumigation

Preparing for Pesticide Fumigation

If your home has been scheduled for fumigation by Eastside pest control, there are a few steps you will need to take in order to provide you with the best possible service and the least inconvenience. These steps must be taken or fumigation may need to be rescheduled for another time.

All items suitable for consumption by humans (i.e. foods, beverages, drugs and medicines) that are not in factory sealed metal cans or plastic bottles must be removed from the structure or double bagged.

The items must be bagged in special bags designed for the fumigation process and must be twisted, folded over and sealed with tape, rubber bands or tie wraps. Food inside of refrigerators and freezers must also be double bagged.

All people, pets and plants must leave or be removed from the building prior to fumigation.     Do not reenter the structure prior to the licensed fumigator declaring that it is cleared for reentry.

Notify the Eastside pest control company of any items that connect your structure to another, such as: tunnels, pathways, conduits, etc.

All heating elements must be unplugged (i.e. heaters, electric skillets, etc.).     All pilot lights must be extinguished (i.e. ovens, hot water heaters, furnaces, dryers, etc.).     Gas must be shut off at the main gas value. Shrubbery should be trimmed around the gas meter to allow access for shutoff.

Turn off all automatic switch controls on all lighting systems and/or appliances.     All interior doors, closets, drawers and cabinets must be opened. Open drapes, raise blinds and open attic vents.

All items obstructing the natural flow of the structure must be removed or retracted. These items include: antenna, guide wires, weather vanes or retractable awnings.     Cut back trees (including those touching the roof) and shrubbery around the structure to prevent damage.

Remove all pillows and mattresses with waterproof covers.

How to prevent rodents from getting in your home or building?

Rodent control service

Natural rodent control methods to kill and get rid of rats and mice

Rat exterminator can evaluate a structure to determine whether or not rats are present, and can make estimates about where in the structure the rats will be found, and how much damage they have done. The exterminator can eliminate the rats and assist a contractor or homeowner with repairing damage and taking steps to reduce the risk of future rat infestations. For example, a rat exterminator may recommend covering large holes

Rats are commonly a problem where a building is located near waterways, creeks and canals or other places where ready water supply is available.

Rats and mice often become a serious problem in cold winter months when they seek food and warmth inside buildings. They may suddenly appear in large numbers when excavation work disturbs their in-ground nesting locations, or their food source is changed, such as, rats feeding in school premises may enter adjoining properties during the school holidays.

Rodent Exclusion is the single most effective way to prevent rodents from getting back inside. A rat can squeeze through a half inch opening, and a mouse through an opening half that size. Our Rodent Exclusion Expert Exterminator will find, and provide a written estimate to repair any entry/exit points around your home.

  • Keep firewood stored as far from the home as possible and store it off the ground. During the winter, store only enough wood next to the house to burn every couple of days.

  • If possible, remove any piles of debris, stones, bricks, etc. If these are near the foundation of the home they serve as harborages to attract rodents. Once there, it is an easy step for rodents to enter the building itself.

  • Do not allow piles of leaves to accumulate next to the home’s foundation. This also serves as attractive harborage for rodents – mice in particular.

  • Holes or cracks larger than one-fourth of an inch should be stuffed with steel wool or wire mesh and then sealed with caulk or foam, otherwise rodents could chew through to enter.

  • Install a good thick weather-stripping on the bottom of all doors to prevent rodents from entering. The garage door may prove difficult to seal completely, so the door from the garage to the house must be sealed tightly.

Identifying Bed Bug Infestations

A  bed bug infestation is only suspected when bites appear on a person.  Oftentimes, the bites are misidentified, thus allowing infestations to go unnoticed, which gives the bed bugs time to spread to other areas of the house.

When cleaning, changing bedding, or staying away from home, look for:

  • Dark spots (about this size: •) which are bed bug excrement and may bleed on the fabric like a marker would
  • Eggs and eggshells, which are tiny (about 1mm) and white
  • Skins that nymphs shed as they grow larger
  • Live bed bugs
  • Rusty or reddish stains on bed sheets or mattresses caused by bed bugs being crushed

Preventing Bed Bug Infestations

Bed bugs are very successful hitchhikers, moving from an infested site to furniture, bedding, baggage, boxes, and clothing. Although they typically feed on blood every five to ten days, bed bugs can be quite resilient; they are capable of surviving over a year without feeding.

A few simple precautions can help prevent bed bug infestation in your home:   Check secondhand furniture, beds, and couches for any signs of bed bug infestation, as described above before bringing them home.

Use a protective cover that encases mattresses and box springs which eliminates many hiding spots. The light color of the encasement makes bed bugs easier to see. Be sure to purchase a high quality encasement that will resist tearing and check the encasements regularly for holes.

Reduce clutter in your home to reduce hiding places for bed bugs.

When traveling:   In hotel rooms, use luggage racks to hold your luggage when packing or unpacking rather than setting your luggage on the bed or floor.   Check the mattress and headboard before sleeping.   Upon returning home, unpack directly into a washing machine and inspect your luggage carefully.
